CDC Recommends Updated COVID Vaccine for Ages 6 Months and Up

CDC Recommendations

The CDC has approved and recommends 1 dose of the 2023-24 updated Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, for everyone aged 5 years and older. People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised may receive additional doses of the updated COVID vaccine. Children aged 4 years and younger require multiple vaccine doses, including at least 1 dose of updated COVID vaccine. COVID vaccination remains the most effective way of preventing severe illness, hospitalizations, and death.

The updated COVID vaccine more closely targets current variants of COVID-19 and could restore protection that may have weakened over time. Previous versions of the vaccine, including the bivalent booster and the original monovalent series, are no longer being offered.

People who recently had COVID may wait up to three months after infection. However, certain factors may be a reason to consider getting vaccinated sooner, such as risk of severe disease for self or loved ones and COVID hospitalization levels.

When will the updated COVID vaccine be available?

TogetherAustin’s mobile vaccine clinics are currently flu-only. Please bookmark this page, as this may change quickly and will be updated with more clinics and types of vaccines. Pharmacies and other providers are in the process of receiving shipments of the updated COVID vaccine. This page also has links to pharmacy appointment scheduling.

How much will the updated COVID vaccine cost?

The updated COVID vaccine will be covered by insurance. Reports of out-of-pocket charges for the updated COVID vaccine with insurance are likely related to some insurance plans still needing to update the vaccine billing codes. However, there should be no cost with insurance.

Uninsured and underinsured adults can receive the updated COVID vaccine for free through the Bridge Access Program, available until December 31, 2024. No-cost COVID-19 vaccines will be available at healthcare providers, federally supported health centers, and retail pharmacy chains participating in the Bridge Access Program. Visit this page for more information and resources.
